Many of us don't know how the name Atbu or Abubakar Tafawa Balewa university came about. To some it was just a university established by the FG to enhance learning, while to others, especially those who live within Bauchi metropolis, will tell you it was named after the then prime-minister of Nigeria, prior to independent Sir. Abubakar Tafawa Balewa.
Tafawa Balewa, served as Nigeria first and only prime-minister of the federation from August 30th 1957 - Jan 15 1966,(born Dec. 1912 - died 15 Jan 1966).
Aside the fact that atbu was carved out of Bauchi, it was also the home of the Abubakar Tafawa Balewa university, Bauchi. Atbu was one of such universities to be established in 1980 by the Federal Government of Nigeria.
Location And Mass Area Of Atbu.
The university is presently located at two different environment, first is in Yelwa campus (old campus) and second at Gubi campus (Main campus) along Bauchi - Nigin - Kano road. The mass area of the institution, is covering a total of 4,500 hectares of land, and somewhat 16 kilometres away from Bauchi town, on Bauchi - Nigin road.
With the main campus being the face of the university, Gubi campus currently has eight hostels block. Five active, two work in progress, to be completed soon and a remedial block. Three faculties, staff quarters, Senate building and School of Remedial's study.
